Food Friday--JUNKAdelic

JUNKAdelic

If you walk to the deepest recesses of Naka-Meguro’s main “shotengai” (the big shopping street off of Yamate-dori), to the point where it seems as if the road has come to an end, you will find a side street with a Mexican restaurant tucked away at its soft, dimly lit end. The funky façade that beckons you closer is Junkadelic. Overflowing with a sense of being hand-crafted and an overwhelmingly artistic interior, it would be impossible to simply regard the restaurant as a place of “casual-dining". Tables and chairs of all shapes and sizes, variegated tapestries, and crucifix-adorned walls stand out against the soft lights and walls of white, christening the atmosphere with a cheap chic. At first glance you see what seems to be an ocean of old, cheap mismatched furniture, statues and other knick-knacks, but soon you find―despite the disparities that abound―that everything comes together just right, providing you with the perfect place to relax and let yourself go. You may have to navigate the tortuous twists and turns of a Japanese shopping street to get here, but as the perpetually-packed tables bear witness to, the great food and reasonable prices make it a journey that you are your poncho-clad band of banditos will find well worth the taking.

The Food: 4/5
Just like mom used to make…if you would have grown up in a tiny tequila-soaked corner of Mexico. I promise that you’ll have no complaints with any of the enchiladas, burritos and tacos stuffed with your choice of beef, chicken or pork. Mind-bogglingly copious varieties of rum, tequila and salsa all perfectly compliment the rich menu.

The Cost: 3/5
Not quite as cheap as a tiny corner of Mexico, but fair enough. The prices are gentle enough that you can still treat yourself to a variety of dishes and pitcher of Margaritas.

The Service: 4/5
Service like you would expect from a restaurant as full of charm as this. My only monition would be that if you turn up out of the blue and expect to be seated, you’re likely to leave disappointed. The weekends are especially crowded so just be sure to phone ahead and make a reservation. Two private rooms are also available.

Viva la Salsa! Viva la Burrito! Viva la Mexico!
