Though most foreigners just think of electronics when they think of Akihabara, a deeper look betrays that it has much more than just gadgetry and gizmos. After stepping forth from the mellow crowds the meander outside of Akihabara station, the scene opens up to a group of brand-new office buildings. At night they don the bling of twinkling lights to show off for the commuters coming to and from the station. At the corner of this group of buildings, however, is where the real show is. Huddled next to the lavish corner is a tiny and fairly unassuming Northern Indian restaurant―Jai Hind. Through the window, two chefs, both the products of 5-star hotels, proudly demonstrate their skills to all who pass by. Despite its discreet fa醇Made, however, the restaurant has gained a strong reputation among curry enthusiasts. Make no mistake, this is not one of the ubiquitous restaurants in Japan that simply masquerade as “foreign”; this is authentic casual Indian dining as it is meant to be.

The Food: 5/5

Let me first just say that I don’t think I’ve ever met a samosa as big as the one I met that day. No matter the dish, an infusion of cooking prowess was evident and enjoyable. Add to this the vast assortment of variegated spices―spices that not only look beautiful, but which open the beauty of the world to you as your taste buds explore them―and you might be apt to think you’ve landed in curry heaven. Choose from dozens are options, including fantastic nan, myriad curries, and even Indian wine.

The Price: 4/5

If you compare the cost and quality of Jai Hind to the ubiquitous curry chains that seem to pepper every street in Tokyo, you are unlikely to be disappointed. Simply put, high-quality food at casual prices in a casual environment.

Service: 3/5

With curry enthusiasts constantly streaming in and out of the restaurant, it can be difficult for the staff to always keep up with the demand. Nonetheless, the service is by no means bad. The multi-cultural staff is always smiling, courteous and extremely helpful. Hopefully, they will see you soon. Namaste!
