David Potts（デヴィッド・ポッツ）―Coming Up for Air

Joy Division, New OrderのPeter Hookとの「共演者」としてしか知られていないであろうデヴィッド・ポッツだが、今回初のソロアルバム”Coming Up for Air”で独り立ちできるアーティストであることを証明した。甘く微妙なノスタルジックさが特徴的な彼のサウンドは、単純明快、幾重にも重なるハーモニー、そしてシンプルなドラムのバックなどの点で初期ビートルズと似ている。さらには、ポール・マッカートニーのソロ作”Ram”のように、作詞作曲を手がけたのみならず、ほとんどの曲で出来る限りの楽器を自らがプレーしている。曲のタイトルからも明らかなビートルズからの大きな影響（“My Favourite Onion”; “Kite”)は隠しても隠しきれないが、独自のスタイルも兼ね備えている。エレクトロ感を取り入れ際立たせたトラック9”Free Yourself”は、アルバム全体に新鮮味を与え、全体を通して聴くに飽きがこない内容になっている。

David Potts―Coming Up for Air

Though perhaps best known to some for his past collaborations with Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order), with his new album, Coming Up for Air, David Potts proves he can stand on his own just fine. Characterized by a sweet, subtly anachronistic sound, Potts’ compositions bear a likeness to the early Beatles in their simplicity, layered harmonies and simple back-beat driven drums. Much like McCartney’s post-Beatles work on Ram, Potts’ not only wrote the music and lyrics for all of the songs, but also endeavored to play all of the instruments on the majority of tracks. Lucky for listeners, though, despite the Beatles influence being very evident throughout (the song titles even betray Beatles influences―“My Favourite Onion”; “Kite”), the album retains an original charm. Further, with tracks like Free Yourself (track 9) tastefully bringing electronic influences and highlights into the mix, the album manages to keep itself fresh and keep listeners engaged throughout.

Recommended for fans of Paul McCartney, Spoon, Acid House Kings, Oasis.
