Whachu talking about Wednesday--David Potts/I’m the Greatest

曲名：アイム・ザ・グレイテスト（I’m the Greatest）

タイトルからすぐに察することが出来るかと思うが、David Potts の曲 “I’m the Greatest” は、俺の事を歌い上げた一曲だ・・・なんて、もちろん（アメリカン）ジョーク！
今日は、英会話レッスンにはもってこいのこの一曲を使ってみよう。

I’m gonna steal the show, telling everyone I know…
　　俺が知ってる皆の話題をさらうんだ・・・

この文中で着目したいのは、 “steal the show” の部分だが、その前に、みんなが “gonna”をわかっているかちょっと確認。これはシンプルに “going to” の口語体（話し言葉）。

例）．
“I am going to go to the store” --- “I’m gonna go to the store”.
　　あの店に行ってくるよ。

“He’s going to do it later” --- “He’s gonna do it later”
　　彼は後でそれをやるつもりだ。

OK！それでは、ここで本題の “steal the show” へ。“steal the show”とは、「最高のパフォーマンスで目立つ」「最高の仕事をする」「話題をさらう」又はシンプルに「大変見応えがある」という意味。だから、“steal the show” するとは、良い行為なんだ。

例）．
“He stole the show today. He hit two home runs, a triple and a double!”
　　彼は今日の話題をかっさらったよ。ホームラン2本に三塁打と二塁打だぜ！

“I had no idea she was such a good singer. She really stole the show, didn’t she?”
　　彼女があんなに素晴しい歌手だったとは、全然知らなかった。彼女が最高に際立ってたよね？

The clowns are funny, but the donkey on the unicycle is totally stealing the show!”
　　ピエロもおもしろいけど、なんてったってドンキーの一輪車乗りが最高だよ。
