実を言うと昨夜のUNITで繰り広げられた最高のライブを体験するまで、僕の中でSPOONと言えば、“ウィル・フェレル出演の映画「Stranger than Fiction（主人公は俺だった）」のサウンドトラックを手がけた”程度の認識だった。それで、このレビューも通常のライブレビューのあるべき姿、「価値ある内容の提供」、からはかけ離れたものになることを不本意ながらご了承いただきたい。例えば、オープニング1曲目が「My Little Japanese Cigarette Case」であることはわかったが、それ以外は曲名すら知らなかった。最近の曲なのか、以前からのお馴染みの曲なのかも。ただ、唯一僕が言えるのは、どの曲も本当に最高だったってこと！
この日はボストンの4人組、Via Audioの演奏でスタート。当初、殆どのオーディエンスが彼らを知らないことは一目瞭然だったのだが、終わるころには、彼らが多くのオーディエンスの心を掴んだのは明らかだった。基本的な彼らのサウンドは、80年代 math rockと南アメリカの裏路地のナイトクラブとたまに覗くトム・ウェイツみたいな陰影な部分と明るいポップを一緒くたに混ぜた感じ。会場を温めるには十分ないい仕事をした彼ら。そして、ステージはメインのSPOON!
彼らの長いセットが始まる頃には、ビールでベロベロになった周囲の雰囲気が心地よいリバーブとなって、夜の訪れを告げた。ギターとキーボードの巧妙な味がちょくちょく顔を覗かせ、しっかりと構成されたオルタナ・グルーヴを聞かせた。さらに、ブリット・ダニエル（Vo.）の強く、情熱的なヴォーカル、そして穏やかでいて容赦なく溢れるエナジー。500人もの踊り狂うファンを虜にするのも無理はない。そして、僕もその内の一人だった。彼らの曲を知らないなんて事関係なしに、僕みたいなファンですら、とにかく会場が一体となってROCKした。ビルボード・チャートでトップ10入り、来日会場も超満員の理由の解明に時間はかからなかった。真っ直ぐ家に帰り、iTunesでアルバムを購入する気満々になった。彼らが再来日する際には、ライブ会場に行くだけでなく、全曲の曲名を知っているだけでもなく、ステージの真ん前で揉みくちゃにされながら、心からの声で一緒に唄うんだ！

Spoon w/ Via Audio
at Daikanyama Unit 2.6.2008
Previous to last night’s incredible show at Unit, my only exposure to Spoon’s music had been through their work performing the soundtrack for the Will Ferrell film, Stranger than Fiction「主人公は僕だった」. Thus, I regret to say that my “live review” will probably lack all of the important details that most people look for in live reviews. For example, though I know that they opened with My Little Japanese Cigarette Case, I don’t know the names of any of the other songs they played. I don’t even know if they were old songs or new songs. What I can tell you though is that every song they played was absolutely incredible!
The night started with the Boston-based quartet Via Audio. At the beginning it was pretty clear that not many people in the audience knew who they were. By the end of their set, though, you could tell that they had just gained a lot of new fans. Their music was basically cheerful pop mixed with little bits of 80’s math rock, seedy South American night clubs and the occasional gloomy overtones one might find in the music of Tom Waits. They put on a good show and did a fine job of getting the people excited about what they had all come for; Spoon.
From the start of their long set the ambient sounds of beer-drenched reverb set the mood for the night—It was a night of tightly constructed alternative grooves marked by frequent embellishments of subtle guitar and keyboard effects. On top of this rested singer Britt Daniel’s strong and passionate vocals and his calm yet relentless energy. No wonder he had all five hundred dancing fans in the palm of his hand the entire time; myself included. Even fans like me, it didn’t matter how unfamiliar I was with the songs, it was clear that they all rocked. It quickly became obvious to me why they were in the Billboard top 10 and why the place was packed. It was all the impetus I needed to know that I should go straight home and order some albums off iTunes. When they come back not only will I be there, not only will I know the names of all the songs, I’ll be the dude pressed against the stage singing along at the top of my lungs
